16.

Dubai, United Arab Emirates

Simone stood on her own for the first time in twenty-four hours.

Lincoln walked through the door to the hospital room just as she was making it back to her bed.

“Simone, what are you doing up? Did the nurse say you could get out of bed?”

Simone held one hand against the wall for balance as she walked. “When you've gotta go, you've gotta go, whether there's a nurse around or not.”

Simone got back to the bed and paused with her palms resting on the side.

Lincoln stepped up to help.

“I got this,” Simone said, and waved him off.

She took a breath and slowly climbed back into bed. Moving around didn't hurt at all. That wasn't the issue. It was that her limbs still felt wobbly and unsure. Her muscle memory seemed to be the last thing coming back to her.

“Should you be out of bed?” Lincoln asked again.

“I was out of bed and the world didn't end,” Simone said. “I'm fine, for real. This bed is the only thing holding me back.”

“How so?”

“I need to get up and move, Lincoln,” she said. “This is the most I've sat still in … I don't even know how long.”

She sighed, frustrated by the situation. An athlete confined to a hospital bed was akin to caging a hungry cheetah that needed to hunt. Simone was never more out of her element than when she was healing from injury.

And as strange as it seemed to her, she didn't consider dying to be the worst that had happened to her. She felt that if she could just get up, stretch her legs, and get moving once again, she would be as good as new in a few short days.

Changing the subject, she said, “Did you get the images from my phone?”

Lincoln sat in the chair beside the bed. “I'm almost afraid to say yes.”

“Why?”

“Because I know as soon as I do, you're going to be putting your clothes on and telling me it's time to hit the road.”

Simone perked up. “Tell me you've had it translated!”

Lincoln sighed. “It's been translated.”

“What did it say? Do you know where the Fallen Star is?”

“I've got a pretty good idea.”

“What does that mean?” Simone asked.

Lincoln rubbed his face. “It's being housed in a lofty place.”

“What does that mean?”

He shook his head. “April has a theory.”

“Lay it on me.”

“The word used in the text is meteora. The language being Greek, we figure it's somewhere in Greece.”

“At the Meteora monasteries,” Simone said.

Lincoln studied her curiously.

“I read about them in college after I blew out my knee doing hurdles,” Simone said. “It all makes sense.”

“Humor me,” Lincoln said.

“The monasteries were built in the fourteenth century, around the same time as the Black Death. If the Fallen Star is what we think it is…”

She paused as her thoughts went to the Serpent's Fang and how she doubted its powers. She wouldn't make that same mistake again.

“If it was used in some way to put an end to the plague,” she continued, “then
